The bulk of materials date from the 1930s through the 1950s and provide a snapshot of a San Francisco Jewish family's life before, during, and after WWII. The collection includes correspondence, planners, journals, and scrapbooks that illuminate the family's social life, business dealings and travels. Of particular interest is Vera Metzger Davis' correspondence with her daughter, Marjorie, while she was at boarding school during 1938 through 1939. These letters include details regarding an upcoming family trip to Europe and concerns over Hitler's rise in power. The collection also includes Vera Metzger Davis' World War II Aircraft Warning Service certificates and ephemera as well as World War I correspondence from Sam Metzger, who served in the United States Air Service during World War I. These letters date from 1918-1919 and were sent from the East Coast to his family back in California. The collection includes three account books (1914-1930) for properties owned by the Metzger, Davis, and Lachman families, including the Baker Hamilton warehouse on Brannan Street in San Francisco and a large family estate located in what is now Fremont, California but on land that was once part of Mission San Jose. Among the Wiel family materials are Fanny Kahn Wiel's travel diary and theater scrapbook dating from the 1890s through around 1907. Each folder of items has a corresponding note from Stephen Wiel explaining the context in more depth. The documents are generally divided into two sections: the Wiel family (Stephen's paternal side of the family) and the Davis-Metzger family (Stephen's maternal side of the family).
